In spite of the past when homepathy was commonly practiced by most physicians in this country, many people still have misconceptions about homeopathy today and how it can be helpful. Here is a list of the most common myths that people new to homeopathy ask me about:
Homeopathy is too expensive for me.
The greatest expense is the first consult with the homeopath. The remedies are actually either included in the visit or a very small fee is charged, $15-25. You will not need to come in often. The usual follow up schedule is every 4-6 weeks until a positive result is obtained. Then visits are less frequent depending on your condition.
Homeopathic remedies won’t work with my prescriptions medications.
Homeopathic remedies will not interfere with your regular medications. The homeopath will work with you even though you may be on several medications.
I’ll have to stop seeing my primary care doctor.
No, actually, we prefer that you keep your current doctor. If you are on medication, your doctor will need to supervise whether to decrease or discontinue using them as your health improves.
My insurance won’t pay for homeopathy.
If you have a PPO and can see “out of network” doctors, we will give you an appropriate statement with the necessary codes to file your own insurance. Because Dr. B is a medical doctor, you may receive some reimbursement of the fees, depending on the type of insurance plan you have. Contact your insurance company for more details.
I tried using homeopathic remedies I purchased from a health food store, and they didn’t help.
Although many people benefit from self-prescribing for more acute conditions (infections, flu, injury), it is important to consult with a professionally trained homeopath if you have a chronic condition. Homeopathy can be confusing to an untrained person. But, once you are under the care of a skilled homeopathic doctor, you will be amazed how fast you will grasp the concepts.
My condition has been going on for too long for homeopathy to help me.
It is true that the longer you have been experiencing a particular condition, the longer it may take to begin healing. As a result of even your first visit with a skilled homeopathic practitioner, a realistic and optimistic roadmap for recovery can be determined.
I’ve heard that you can get worse before you get better with homeopathy.
After you receive a homeopathic remedy, there may be a temporary flare up of your condition, but this is actually a good sign that the remedy is beginning to work. This is called an “aggravation.” Aggravations of older symptoms may flare up, but they too are usually less intense and of shorter duration. So, while some would interpret this healing process as a worsening effect, it is actually the beginning of healing on a deeper level than traditional medicine provides.
